The dependence of magnetism and structure on the thickness and growth temperature in polycrystalline FePt films was investigated. Results showed that coercivity decreased with decreasing film thickness and annealing temperature and was strongly correlated with the extent of chemical order. With increasing chemical order, the FePt grain size in the L10 was found to increase. It was also suggested that nucleation limited the chemical ordering in the thin films.
