The properties of interacting phonons are determined in a unified fashion through a study of the displacement correlation function. Expressions for the attenuation are obtained at all frequencies and for different anharmonic mechanisms in insulators and helium. Second sound is shown to be an additional phonon mode at long wavelength. © 1965.
