Taking as the starting material the Aurivillius oxide Bi2SrNb2O9, it has been demonstrated for the first time that the (Bi2O2)2+ layers can be doped with the Pb2+ cation, which also possesses a stereochemically active lone pair. Samples of composition Bi2-xPbxSrNb2Oy have been prepared and yield a solid solution over the entire range 0≤x≤2. The substitution of Pb2+ is accompanied by the occurrence of oxygen vacancies, in order to compensate the reduced cation charge. © 1993.
