A 'bottom-up' approach to construct a broad-bandwidth nanocrystals (NC)-based gain media was discussed. The optical emission spectra from NC-titania composite lasers were successfully demonstrated. It was observed that the resulting composite resonators represent a new paradigm for quantum-confined lasers, where both the gain media and the feedback structures are easily handled. It was found that multiple-wavelength lasers, that function simultaneously at spectrally distinct regions, can be quickly created.
