Dr. Bonolo Mathibela is a Research Scientist at the IBM Research center in Johannesburg, South Africa. She obtained a DPhil in Robotics, from the University of Oxford, in 2014 and joined IBM Research in 2015. Her DPhil research focused on developing scene understanding and interpretation algorithms for autonomous driving. She also holds a BSc degree in Mechatronics Engineering from the University of Cape Town.
At IBM Research, Dr. Mathibela conducts computer vision and IoT research. She leads the lab’s efforts in Intelligent Transport Systems, and has developed an autonomous platform that combines real-time road traffic data with Tweets to reduce road traffic congestion in the face of failing road traffic infrastructure. She also currently works on applying Deep Learning techniques to solve challenging problems in medical image processing for cervical cancer screening in resource limited contexts.
Dr. Mathibela is a member of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society and IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society. She serves on the Deep Learning Indaba Advisory Board and regularly participates in various women in technology events such as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing Conference and the UNESCO International Day for Women and Girl's in Science.
Dr. Mathibela supervises and mentors research students. Completed internship projects, under her supervision, include the development of a wildfire risk prediction model for the city of Cape Town. Her current student works on medical image processing for prescription drug classification.
