profile

I am a Research Staff Member at the IBM Watson Research Center.  My work focuses on applying Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms to solve real-world problems with a strong emphasis on usability.   I was the lead developer for SwiftFile, an intelligent agent that uses machine-learning to help users file their e-mail into folders.  I also helped design and develop the SpamGuru anti-spam filter.   My current research focuses on the application of deep learning to problems of computational creativity.

In addition to my work at IBM, I am very interested in improving the educational opportunities for children in rural Africa.  I help lead the technology team for Powering Potential, a small non-profit which is building solar-powered computer labs for secondary schools in rural Tanzania.
