Mario Blaum was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He got his Ph. D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1985, year in which he joined the IBM Almaden Research Center. In 2002 his division was transferred to Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, where he remained until 2009, year in which he returned to Almaden. Mario works in many aspects of coding for data storage, like array codes, asymmetrical and unidirectional codes, erasure decoding and codes with local and global properties. He is the author and co-author of numerous articles and patents. He is an IEEE Fellow since 2000.
