Faisal joined IBM in June, 2013. He is currently a member of the Knowledge Induction (KI) team in the IBM Research division. He is the Technical Lead of NLP area in the KI team.
Prior to joining IBM, Faisal was a member of leading European research centers such as Fondazione Bruno Kessler (FBK-irst) (Italy), German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) (Germany), and LIMSI-CNRS (France) between 2008 and 2013.
He also worked as a Senior Software Engineer and Project Lead between 2005 and 2007 in various software companies.
Faisal received his PhD in Computer Science at the University of Trento, Italy. His dissertation was focused on improving the effectiveness of information extraction from biomedical text. He was an Erasmus Mundus scholar and studied a double degree M.Sc., specializing in Computational Linguistics, at Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy and Saarland University, Germany.
One of his papers was included in the Best Paper Selection of the 2014 IMIA Yearbook in the category "Knowledge Representation and Management" by the International Medical Informatics Association.
His systems were ranked among the top systems in various academic shared tasks (i.e. research challenges) for relation extraction, named entity recogniton, sentiment analysis, negation scope detection, etc in SemEval 2013, *SEM 2012, DDIExtraction 2011, EVALITA 2011 and CALBC 2010.
