Bio

Lloyd A. Treinish is a leader in environmental sciences at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. I head the atmospheric sciences research group with a focus on weather, water and climate.  My career is dedicated to studying and finding solutions for environmental sciences problems, and I help lead IBM's research and development in these areas.  As an IBMer for 32 years, I am an IBM Distinguished Engineer and Chief Scientist at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center.  I am a pioneer of scientifically-based services for environmental issues with over four decades of experience in earth and space sciences, and related computing, and observing and simulation systems at IBM and NASA.  I am widely recognized as being the originator of Deep Thunder, IBM's weather prediction model. It initially enabled the practical and proactive use of advanced modelling for decision making in short-term, highly localized weather-sensitive business operations. Deep Thunder now helps to drive our operational forecasting data services. I am IBM’s leading expert in the application of supercomputing technology to environmental forecasting and disaster mitigation. I bring a combination of experience in planning, operations (especially for issues related to weather prediction), modelling and applications, including delivery of solutions to end-user clients. I am a leading IBM expert in scientific visualization and data models. The visualization work is pioneering from a user-centric design perspective utilizing task-driven decomposition. My earlier work in data models is the standard in the space plasma physics community and derivatives of that work are a standard in the atmospheric and oceanographic communities. In all of these areas, I have broad skills ranging from theory to implementation and am able to combine this experience with an understanding of customer activities and the implications for current and new business opportunities.

Specialties:

  • Member of the steering committee for the National Science Foundation Research Coordination Networks project CANVASS (Coastal Alliance Network for Visualization, Assessment, Science, and Stakeholders), led by Stony Brook University

I joined IBM Research in 1990 after doing related work for over twelve years at NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD as a senior computer scientist, where I led development teams, and designed and implemented advanced scientific data and information systems in the earth and space sciences, and did research in scientific data management and visualization, and space and atmospheric sciences.  I have been issued thirteen patents, authored over 70 technical articles, and presented extensively at external conferences.
