profile

Kun is a Research Staff Member of the Public Health Research Group in the Department of Computer Science at IBM Almaden Research Center. Dr. Hu is trained as a system and behavioral scientist with specific expertise in epidemiological modeling. She is particularly interested in applying methodologies, such as system dynamics, agent-based modeling and social network analysis (SNA) to get a better understanding of distinct complex dynamic systems in the domain of public health. She is PI of the research project using big data analytics to accelerate the foodborne disease outbreak investigation. She is an active member and committer to the open source project: Spatio-Temporal Epidemiological Modeler (STEM) at IBM research, where she leads team work on building epidemiological models in STEM. She has formed community efforts to respond recent epidemic outbreaks, such as H7N9 in 2013, Ebola in 2014-2015, Zika in 2015-2016 etc.

Dr. Hu has co-authored over 30 technical journal, conference and workshop papers. She also filed many US patents. Kun received her Ph.D. in Industrial and Systems Engineering with specialist in Management System Engineering from Virginia Tech on May 2011, supervised by Prof. Hazhir Rahmandad. She also obtained M.E. in Control Theory and Technology and B.S. in Communication Engineering in China.
