Jen-Yao Chung received the B.S. degree in computer science and information engineering from National Taiwan University and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since June 1989, he has been with the T. J. Watson Research Center as a research staff member. Currently, he is the senior manager for Industry Technology and Solutions, where he is responsible for identifying and creating emerging solutions with focus on "Smart Cities and Green Computing & Business". Before that, he was Chief Technology Officer for IBM Global Electronics Industry, where he was responsible for identifying and growing new technologies into future businesses for IBM. Before that, he was senior manager of the electronic commerce and supply chain department. He conducted research on business process integration and management. Before that, he was program director for the IBM Institute for Advanced Commerce Technology office. He was responsible for transferring Research e-Business technology to IBM's service divisions.
He has been involved in research, development, and customer engagements in electronic commerce, electronic marketplaces, and Web application systems. Dr. Chung has participated in several industrial standards and workgroup including: Open buying on internet (OBI, openbuy.org), XML/EDI (xmledi-group.org), CommerceNet eCo framework (eco.commerce.net), RosettaNet.org, ebXML.org, and TPC-D. Dr. Chung has extensive experiences in the e-business innovations and engaged in several customer projects using web services technology to implement business integrations. Dr. Chung's current research is in green computing and technologies, e-marketplaces, XML and EDI, integrating existing business with the World Wide Web, and business process integration and management. Previously, Dr. Chung had worked on design and development of a high-performance database query solution for IBM large enterprise system, and World Wide Web Connection to enterprise system.
Dr. Chung is co-Editor in Chief of the International Journal of Service Oriented Computing and Applications (published by Springer, EI indexed). He also served as editorial board member for over 10 international journals. Dr. Chung is the co-founder and co-chair of the IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Electronic Commerce (TCEC). Dr. Chung co-founded IEEE International Conference on e-Commerce Technology (CEC) in 1998 and IEEE International Conference on e-Business Engineering (ICEBE) in 2004. He has served as general chair and program chair for over 25 international conferences. He has authored or coauthored over 180 technical papers in published journals or conference proceedings. He was awarded an IEEE Outstanding Paper award in 1995, two IBM Outstanding Technical Achievement awards, in 1994 and 2000, an IBM Outstanding Contribution award in 1997, and five IBM Research Division awards, in 1990, 1996, 2001 and 2008. He received ICEC2002 Best paper nomination. He is an IEEE Fellow, a Distinguished Engineer of ACM and a Member of IBM Academy of Technology.
