Hui Lei is Director and Chief Technology Officer of IBM Watson Health Cloud, an IBM Distinguished Engineer, an IBM Master Inventor, and a member of the IBM Academy of Technology. He provides leadership on the Watson Health Cloud technical strategy, and spearheads the design and development of the Watson Health Cloud platform. Previously, he was Senior Manager of the Cloud Platform Technologies Department at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, and led IBM's worldwide research strategies in Cloud Infrastructure Services and Cloud Managed Services. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University.
Hui Lei's work has spanned the areas of cloud computing, big data, mobile and pervasive computing, service-oriented computing, and business process management, with an emphasis on software infrastructure and data management issues. As an inventive experimental computer scientist, he enjoys conceiving innovative ideas and validating those ideas via end-to-end system design, agile implementation, real-world deployment, and in-market evaluation, with the goal of affecting both the state of the art and the state of the practice. He has initiated and led pioneering work on mobile data access, mobile crowdsensing, context awareness, dependable messaging, cloud infrastructure services, cloud managed services, systems of insights, and health cloud. He has over seventy issued or pending patents to his credit. His technical vision and creative contributions have significantly impacted many IBM software products and services, such as IBM Watson Health Core, IBM Cloud OpenStack Services, IBM Cloud Managed Services, IBM Cloud Automated Modular Management, IBM Cloud Orchestrator, SmartCloud Enterprise, SmartCloud Enterprise Plus, SmartCloud Application Services, WebSphere Business Monitor, WebSphere Business Modeler, WebSphere Everyplace Access, WebSphere Everyplace Server, and Mobile File Sync. His work has been repeatedly recognized as IBM Research Accomplishments and IBM Outstanding Research Accomplishments. His work has also been featured in numerous news media including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, New Scientist, eWeek, Fast Company, and ZDNet. He is a four-time recipient of IBM's Outstanding Technical Achievement Award, for his research contributions to Context-Aware Computing, Mobile Crowdsensing, Model-Driven Business Transformation, and QoS-Aware Web Service Composition, respectively.
An active and recognized member of the international technical community, Dr. Lei is a Fellow of the IEEE, a member of the IEEE Computer Society Golden Core, and a past Chair of IEEE Computer Society's Technical Committee on Business Informatics and Systems (TCBIS). He has received an IEEE Computer Society Technical Achievement Award "for pioneering contribution to scalable access to real-world data", and an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Service Award "for continual and outstanding service to IEEE Computer Society's mobile computing, cloud computing, and e-business communities". He is Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, a Steering Committee Member of the IEEE Cloud Computing magazine, an Advisory Board Member of the Inderscience International Journal of Big Data Intelligence, and an Editor of the Springer Journal of Service-Oriented Computing and Applications. He has also participated in numerous conferences as a steering committee member, organizing committee member, program committee member, keynote speaker, or panel speaker. Dr. Lei holds honorary titles of Visiting Professor at Sun Yat-sen University and of Adjunct Professor at the The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In addition, he has served on PhD dissertation committees in several universities. Among them are the University of Cambridge, Duke University, North Carolina State University, and Monash University.
