Enrico Siragusa joined IBM Research in January 2016 as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Computational Genomics group managed by Dr. Laxmi Parida. His research focuses on the engineering of algorithms and data structures for the analysis of high-throughput sequencing data. Specific applications of interest include assembly of highly heterozygous haplotypes in targeted re-sequencing, genome abundance estimation in shotgun metagenomic sequencing, measurement and clinical interpretation of DNA methylation in 5mC-immunoprecipitated samples.

Enrico graduated in 2015 from the International Max-Planck Research School for Computational Biology and Scientific Computing in Berlin, Germany. Under the supervision of Prof. Knut Reinert, Enrico engineered approximate string matching methods for high-throughput sequencing and developed Yara, an efficient exact tool for DNA read mapping. Moreover, during his PhD, Enrico lead the development of the open-source project SeqAn, the most comprehensive C++ library for sequence analysis. While interning at NVIDIA, he worked on CUDA-acceleration of string matching algorithms based on the Burrows-Wheeler Transform.
