profile

I am a member of the research staff at the IBM Almaden Research Center, working within the Healthcare Informatics department. I am currently working on the AALIM multimodal mining project -- a project whose goal is to make medical record data searchable for automated decision support for physicians. I joined the IBM Almaden Research Center in 2000.

I received a Ph.D. in computer science from MIT in 1995, working at the MIT AI Lab (now CSAIL) and supervised by Prof. Tomaso Poggio. I was at UC Berkeley as a postdoc with Prof. Jitendra Malik for 1 year, and I have also worked at Autodesk's Vision Technology Center and SRI's AI Center prior to joining IBM.

I am interested in applying example-based and machine learning approaches to computer vision, mostly in the areas of object detection and tracking in images and video. In past projects, I have worked on detection and tracking of the following:

  • nonrigid heart shape
  • facial features for face recognition
  • person tracking using stereo
  • eye-gaze tracking
  • vehicle tracking using motion-based grouping

I have also worked on an example-based approach to graphics, a type of image-based rendering.
