Barton Smith manages the Collaboration Science group in the Computer Science Department at IBM Research - Almaden. His current work centers on understanding how people use information technology to collaborate and share information using on-line communities. Dr. Smith received his B.S. Degree in chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin in 1972, and his Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from Harvard University in 1977. After two years at Stanford University where he was a National Science Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow, he joined the IBM Research Division in San Jose, California, in 1979. In his 34 years as a research staff member in IBM Research, he has worked on fundamental problems in polymer, materials, and computer science, and on IBM products including magnetic disks, optical disks, magnetic tape, typewriter ribbon, circuit boards, integrated circuits, multi-chip ceramic circuit modules, optical data transmission, displays, IBM ThinkPads, and IBM Connections enterprise social software.
