Rama Akkiraju is a Distinguished Engineer at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. Since joining IBM Research, she has worked on agent-based decision support systems, electronic market places, business transformation analytics, business process integration technologies including semantic Web services. She is one of the drivers of W3C standard on SAWSDL (Semantic Annotations for Web Services Description Language) and is the editor of the SAWSDL User guide. Rama is currently working on researching, developing and delivering innovative solutions that transform the services engagement (sales) process for IBM’s services businesses – with an aim to improve the service solution quality and service engagement process effectiveness.

Rama has co-authored 4 book chapters, and over 35 technical journal, conference and workshop papers. Rama has seven issued patents and 22 others are pending. Rama is the recipient of 3 best paper awards in 1998, 1999 and 2009. These include an INFORMS Daniel H. Wagner award and a Decision Sciences Journal award. Within IBM, Rama received 2 Outstanding Technical Achievement Awards (2000, 2010), 3 Research Accomplishment Awards (2000, 2009), 3 Research Division Group Award (1997, 2005, 2009), and has been selected for Top Talent leadership education at IBM multiple times (2000, 20004, 2008). She has been the Watson chair of the Service Science Professional Interest Community (PIC) at IBM Research between 2007-2010.

Rama holds a masters degree in Computer Science. She also holds an MBA (Masters in Business Administration) from New York University, Stern School of Business. Rama graduated at the top of the MBA class in 2004 at New York University and received a gold medal of honor from the university.
