profile

Hi. I'm Abdigani Diriye and I’m a Research Scientist and Manager at IBM Research Africa. I currently manage the Inclusive Financial Services Group, and I work with some talented people there to help address Africa’s grand challenges.

I work in the space of HCI, data-mining and FinTech to design, develop and deploy novel solutions that combine human- and machine-generated data to support people in making sense of information and accessing services more easily, effectively and efficiently. I have explored these topics while working in academia, corporates and start-ups.

Previously, I was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University, where I worked with Dr. Niki Kittur on ways we can leverage human- and machine-generated data to support people when sensemaking on the Web.

Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon University, I spent two enjoyable stints working at Microsoft Research (June '10, Oct '11), and one at FX Palo Alto Labs (June '11).

I obtained my PhD in computer science from University College London where I was advised by Prof. Ann Blandford and Dr. Anastasios Tombros. My research focused on understanding the role search interfaces play during information-seeking, and how we can use this to inform design. I have published over 20 patents and papers.

I've also started a couple of start-ups and not-for-profit organizations in the past. You can find more information on my personal website.
