Toshio Suganuma is a senior researcher of Systems group at IBM Research - Tokyo. He joined IBM Research in 1992, and has been working on compiler optimizations and runtime systems for efficient implementation of program languages. His past projects on language implementation include High Performance Fortran (HPF) compiler, Java Just-In-Time compiler, and X10 Java Backend. He is currently working on the PL/X compiler, a vital IBM proprietary assembly compiler on System Z, to be more modern and to improve the efficiency of the generated code.

He received his Ph.D in Computer Science from Waseda University in 2007, and Bachelor and Master of Engineering degrees in Applied Mathematics from Kyoto University in 1980 and 1982, respectively. He is a senior member of Association of Computing Machinery (ACM).


Research Interests


Optimizing compilers, Language runtime systems, Parallel algorithms, Legacy transformation (e.g. COBOL to Java translation), Middleware performance.
