Julian de Hoog joined IBM Research in November 2014, and is currently working on a range of energy and internet-of-things projects. He is passionate about energy storage and solar PV generation, and sees a bright future for low-cost, distributed renewable generation and energy storage.
Julian received the B.Sc in Computer Science and Mathematics from McGill University in Montreal, Canada (2004), and the M.Sc and PhD degrees, both in Computer Science, from the University of Oxford, UK (2007 and 2011, respectively). He has published over 30 academic articles, has held several panel and committee positions at conferences such as ACM e-Energy and IEEE ISGT (Europe and Asia), and reviews for several journals including the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
Prior to joining IBM, Julian spent three years as a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, Australia. As part of this project he worked together with several utility partners to study the impacts of electric vehicles on distribution networks, and developed smart charging algorithms for optimal load shifting. He was a member of the Victoria Electric Vehicle Trial Planning Group. Julian remains an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne and continues to be involved in PhD student supervision and joint research projects.
